Myths debunked – Magnetism and pinballs
Let’s address the myths about magnetism in pinball once and for all. Any pinball reacting to magnets within a game must have some level of magnetic susceptibility. It’s simple physics: a completely non-magnetic ball wouldn’t interact with magnetic features at all! The key is understanding that different steel alloys have varying degrees of susceptibility of becoming magnetized themselves.
While some manufacturers claim their pinballs are “non-magnetic,” this is misleading, and very much unwanted. Carbon chromium steel, often used in pinballs, does have lower susceptibility than standard steel, especially when highly polished and demagnetized. High-carbon chromium steel is even better. However, it still reacts to magnets, which is essential for gameplay. Truly non-magnetic materials would result in drastically different ball weight and behavior, disrupting the intended pinball experience.
Ultimately, choosing the best pinball means finding one with a lower magnetic susceptibility, not zero. This ensures proper interaction with magnets while minimizing unwanted side effects. So, don’t be fooled by false claims – all functional pinballs have and actually need some degree of magnetism.
